The College Football Championship is the culmination of the college football season, and it is one of the most exciting events in all of sports. This article will provide you with everything you need to know about the College Football Championship, including its history, format, and the teams that have won it.

History of the College Football Championship

The College Football Championship was first awarded in 1936, and it was known as the National Championship Game. The game was played between the winner of the Eastern Conference and the winner of the Western Conference. The first National Championship Game was won by the Ohio State Buckeyes, who defeated the Washington Huskies 21-10.

In 1978, the College Football Playoff was created. The College Football Playoff is a four-team playoff that determines the national champion. The four teams that qualify for the College Football Playoff are the winners of the four major college football conferences: the Big Ten Conference, the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Southeastern Conference, and the Pac-12 Conference.

Format of the College Football Championship

The College Football Playoff is a single-elimination tournament. The four teams that qualify for the College Football Playoff are seeded 1 through 4. The top two seeds receive a bye into the semifinals, while the third and fourth seeds play in the quarterfinals.

The semifinals and championship game are played at neutral sites. The semifinals are played on New Year's Day, and the championship game is played on the second Monday in January.
